Shubman Gill is down and could be out for a few days, if not longer. A team official said he is under the weather. Whether he will be able to play India’s first game, against Australia, on October 8 is still not decided.

Reports emerged on Friday (October 6) that the opener is suffering from dengue but the exact nature of Gill’s health concern could not exactly be confirmed. A team official had this to say to Cricbuzz: “He’s under the weather, the medical team is closely monitoring him. We are hoping he gets better soon.”

In a rich vein of form, Gill had been rested for the third and final game of the recently-concluded bilateral ODI series against Australia, having scored 74 and 104 in the first-two matches. Both of India’s official World Cup warm-up games were later washed out, but Gill did travel with the team.

Understandably, Gill (24) could not participate in the Indian team’s nets on Thursday and this has given credence speculation over the opening partner for skipper Rohit Sharma in the game against Australia. One of Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul could be given the responsibility.
